UPI is a payment interface, not a single account with one universal allowance. The bank account, application, transaction category and security controls all affect what can be paid. This guide separates ordinary transfers from special merchant categories and uses a named bank example instead of treating every limit as national.
Follow the money rather than the app logo
An ordinary bank-account UPI payment connects the payer’s account to a recipient through the payment network. A UPI address or QR code identifies a destination; it does not prove that the person presenting it is the intended merchant. Read the recipient name and amount in the confirmation screen. A saved contact can still have an obsolete payment address. Keep the transaction reference after authorisation so that the bank or service can locate the payment if the status becomes unclear. The interface can look similar while drawing funds from a different product.
A named bank example is more useful than a universal claim
State Bank of India’s published guidance states an ordinary limit of ₹1,00,000 per transaction and per day for BHIM SBI Pay, UPI on YONO SBI or YFEI after the initial restrictions. It also describes a maximum of 20 person-to-person transactions in 24 hours per account. Those are SBI product statements checked on 23 October 2026, not a guarantee for every bank. A different bank, a new registration or an unusual transaction may have a lower permitted amount. Check your own application and bank before arranging a large payment.
Verified product limits and their scope
| Product or situation | Published amount | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary SBI UPI | ₹1,00,000 | Per transaction and daily value after cooling period |
| UPI Lite payment | ₹1,000 | Small-value transaction limit in SBI guide |
| UPI Lite balance | ₹5,000 | Maximum balance in SBI guide |
| Initial PIN setting/reset | ₹5,000 | Initial security restriction; duration differs by operating system |
The source describes an initial 24-hour restriction for Android and a daily ₹5,000 restriction for the first five days on iOS after setting or resetting the PIN. Because this is an account-security rule, do not try to defeat it by repeatedly reinstalling applications or splitting suspicious transfers. Confirm the current rule in your bank’s authenticated support channel.
Special categories do not raise every transfer limit
The NPCI addendum for specified categories addresses higher per-transaction ceilings for tax-aligned payments. A category-specific ₹5 lakh ceiling is not permission to send that amount to any private recipient. Merchant verification, category coding and the bank’s implementation matter. Similarly, a wallet balance, a credit line and a bank-account transfer should not be described as the same UPI product. Before paying a large bill, identify the accepted route and ask the biller how it will associate the payment with the correct reference or account.
Prepare for a transfer that matters
Check the available balance, applicable limit and recipient details before the due time rather than discovering a restriction at the counter. If the recipient has changed a QR code or account, verify the change using a previously trusted contact route. A small test can help detect a mistyped destination, but it does not authenticate a stranger or guarantee recovery of a later payment. For an invoice, retain the invoice number and the payment receipt together. A screenshot supplied by the recipient is not a substitute for your own bank’s transaction record.
Status, reversals and recurring permissions
If the account is debited but the recipient reports no credit, inspect the status before sending the same amount again. The NPCI MyUPI support service provides transaction-status, complaint and mandate-management functions. A pending transfer, a failed transfer and a completed transfer to the wrong recipient are different cases. Record which one the official system reports. Review recurring payment permissions separately from one-time transfers: cancelling a merchant account is not necessarily the same action as revoking a payment mandate. Keep confirmation of both where relevant.
UPI preparation checklist
- Identify bank account, wallet, credit product or Lite balance.
- Check your bank’s amount and count limits.
- Allow for registration or PIN-reset cooling periods.
- Verify recipient name and invoice reference.
- Keep the transaction ID and final status.
- Review recurring mandates you no longer need.
Limits protect accounts and manage risk; they do not certify that a payment is wise or that a merchant will deliver. Treat an urgent request to move the maximum allowance as a reason to pause. A legitimate support agent can explain a restriction without asking you to disclose a PIN or approve an unrelated transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Is ₹1 lakh a guaranteed limit in every UPI application?
No. It is the ordinary SBI example used here. Banks, products, categories and account-security conditions can impose different limits.
Does a higher tax-payment ceiling apply to friends and family?
No. A specified merchant-category limit does not automatically increase ordinary person-to-person transfers.
Should I repeat a payment when the first one is pending?
Check the official status and account record first. Repeating it before resolving the status can create a duplicate payment.
